When we think of the Martial Arts, many times we think destructive Board Breaking, awe inspiring aerial kicks, and continuous sets of kicking and punching. Many times what we don’t bother to pay much attention to is the journey behind all the sparring rounds, kata repetitions, and intimidating yells. The journey of young Blake Murphy of Reno,NV is certainly a story that has taken a Mind of its own.

As an infant living in Kentucky, Blake suffered through a Traumatic Brain Injury which resulted in residual brain damage. As a result Doctors told his mother, Jocelynne, that Blake would have a difficult time dealing with emotional functions such as Attention, Self Control, Anger Management, Concentration, Acceptance, Change, and General Emotions.

“We were told early on by his neurologist that at any given time, things can become difficult for Blake,” said Jocelynne. Blake was released from early intervention at about 1 years old, but was told by doctors that when he starts school or anything else that challenges him, he may be faced with some difficulty. For some time, the brain injury seemed to have had no affect on Blake. Jocelynne worked diligently to prep Blake “just in case”. At age 3, Blake was already reading.

In that same year the early signs of the brain trauma began. Blake started a Head Start program where his teachers began to notice he would ‘zone out’ periodically. He tested positive for silent seizures and ADD/ADHD. At this point, Jocelynne decided to put her son in Martial Arts to help him channel his energy, mentally and physically.

Said Jocelynne, “Blake excelled immediately with the addition of Martial Arts into his life. He could sit through a class, pay attention, and even learn lengthy forms at 4years old.” Blake even racked up wins in tournament competition. He entered elite tournament circuits such as NASKA, RSKC, PRO-AM, and WKA. He even earned the title of Kentucky State Champion in Katas and Point Sparring at age 4yrs.

In 2008, he and his family moved out from their Murray, Kentucky home and trekked their way to Reno, NV. The first weekend they were in Reno, Blake competed in his very first LEAGUE tournament (then named BASKA). They hadn’t found the right Martial Arts school yet, but they wanted to compete anyhow and see what West Coast competition was all about.

Blake ended up at Evolution Martial Arts and Head Instructor Matt McBride. Blake struggled early on in LEAGUE (BASKA) tournaments and he didn’t win very often in the 6-7yr old divisions. Slowly, his mother saw the frustration creeping in that Blake’s neurologist warned years ago. “He go use to winning; it was easy for him to win for years and now he had to work hard to gain that success again,” said Jocelynne.

Blake’s “pattern” was broken and “change” had occurred. Children with Brain Injury don’t do well with change. So, he’s been trying to get that “pattern” back; that winning pattern. Blake’s emotions were always on edge. He began to lose control of his anger, spoke loudly without thinking of what he’s saying and how it will affect him or others, and he began acting out. Blake also worked really hard to be part of a team, and wasn’t picked right away, which really sent his emotions spiraling.

“So there it was, the effect of his brain trauma didn’t show itself until he was 7yrs old,” said Jocelynne. This delayed effect is very common with the type of injury Blake had in the area that was damaged. Psychologists told the family that they would just have to work through it, and it would take time. While its not easy to change the way you think, Blake’s brain is programmed a certain way without the “normal ability” to alter it. It would take understanding from his coaches and that little bit of extra attention to help Blake succeed.

Every week Blake spends several hours with a Psychologis talking, writing, and acting out the ‘proper’ way to act/think in different situations. He’s working very hard to re-direct his thinking pattern. In Martial Arts, Blake feels ‘at home’. It has become his comfort zone. He struggles, but he works through it with the help of his coaches, teammates, and the friends he has made at the competitions. “Even when he’s had a rough day at school, he’s anxious for karate class”, says Jocelynne.

Blake has been training with Matthew McBride and Martin Amba for 2 years now. He’s been receiving a ton of extra help from Assistant Instructors such as Tyler Crowley, MJ Amba, and Alvin Santiago. Blake has also earned his way onto Team Black Rock of Reno,NV. He’s getting better in both sparring and open forms, but he still has a long way to go and there’s always room for improvement.

Jocelynne tried to summarize her son’s journey by saying, “This is the child that wasn’t suppose to live, then was told he’d never walk, talk or live a ‘normal life’. He’s beat all odds and I credit a lot of that to this sport, the devotion of his Instructors over the years and the fact that no one has given up on him when things were difficult. It’s never easy, there’s always something to work on, but he loves every minute of it, and that helps tremendously. He’s always learning and working towards being a better kid; more respectful, determined, and a good sport….win or lose.”

Blake Murphy is truly an inspiration in the Martial Arts and in Life. We all can draw upon the fight he displays daily in his Journey. We look forward to continue to hear big things from this inspiring individual.

INJURY NEWS:

04/07/12-

The Easter Weekend of Pallen M2 teen fighter, BRIANNA LEWIS didn’t get off to a good start as she dislocated her knee and fractured her ankle executing a hook kick in training practice. “She’s out for six weeks with the ankle but the knee may need some work too. but we hope she recovers quickly,” stated her father, Walter. Working on her side is her youthful healing ability and The LEAGUE hopes to see the feisty female fighter to be back in the ring sooner rather than later….

03/16/2012-

Update on World Champion Lightweight fighter WILLIE HICKS‘ health status for the 2012 season. He chimed in, “I have a Ruptured ACL I have a slight tear in my MCL. I have a slight tear in my Meniscus also and water in my knee.” The fan-favorite athlete went on an amazing three year run demolishing fighters in his path. Sport Martial Arts just isn’t the same without the fiery competitor on the competition floor. When asked what timetable he forsees for his comeback, Hicks replied, “The doctor and I have to talk about the next step for me to take….”……..

OFF-THE-MAT NEWS:

04/25/2012-

THE WEEKLY DISH recently caught up with former WORLD CHAMPION Heavyweight Sparring fighter, WADE TAYLOR. He is currently recovering from a slight Motorcycle accident in which he injured his shoulder and wrist. He is in good spirits though as his dojo in Livermore, CA is picking up and he’s slowly introducing his aspiring Martial Art students into the Open Tournament Competition scene. In his competition prime, Taylor was one of California’s best Heavyweight fighters. Armed with a sharp, slicing roundhouse kick, a solid blitz, a surprising fadeaway hook kick, and amazing nimbleness for a heavyweight, Taylor was a fighter to reckon with. The LEAGUE and Sport Martial Arts can’t wait to see solid athletes that are “Taylor-Made” real soon….!!

03/24/2012-

Bay Area’s Best Team Coach, DARRYL DOBASHI recently chimed in regarding the difference between the athletes of today versus yesterday, “Fighters today in my opinion are a different breed….alot of speed and finesse. The sport has changed a lot since I was an active fighter. I just would like to see the judges get back to the old school and not reward these fighters with cheap points, let the fighters fight, clean points. Back in the day you really had to make contact for a point, today if you can get a big crowd to yell and cheer ’2,2,2,2,2!’, you’ll probably get 2 points for nothing.” Dobashi stated that his Bay Area’s Best Team was the only Team to field a Men’s Sparring Team at NBL’s Supergrands for 21 years straight. Certainly a sign of a commitment to excellence by Dobashi and his father, Mike. Bay Area’s Best has rich tradition and long history. Due to several private factors, he doubts B.A.B. will be at this year’s Supergrands. Regardless, Bay Area’s Best will go down as one of the Best Teams in Sport Martial Arts history.

The LEAGUE’s WEEKLY DISH connected with 2-time LEAGUE Heavyweight Adult Black Belt Champion, MICHAEL JEFFERSON of Oakland’s FROHM MARTIAL ARTS. He is currently residing in Woodside Queens, NY for educational and personal development purposes. He points out that the difference between the Bay Area and NY is “A lot more people and a lot of attitude.” Regarding his Martial Arts training, “I’m not training but back in august I went to TCK and had extreme workouts with MASTER JADI TENTION, MARK OMARD, TROY BINNS, AND AKIN WILLIAMS. Shoutouts to Jadi’s devoted student Chris and MAMA TENTION for giving me the greatest hospitality while I was in the Bronx.” Jefferson is currently attending LaGuardia College and is juggling an 18-unit load pursuing a degree in Psychology. In closing, Jefferson’s message to his fans, “When they ask me how I do it and not complain… I tell them because its already willed… It has to be done… so why allow the negative emotions to manifest, besides it take valuable time and energy to be sad and contemplate giving up.”

03/13/2012-

Congrats to 2010 overall LEAGUE Sparring Grand Champion JULIO CASTRO who made headlines in California’s Sport Martial Arts Community by earning a 2nd round Knockout in his very first MMA Fight in Oakland, CA. A smooth transition for Mr. Castro who has a early 1-0 career record. Keep it up Champ!!…..

TRAINING NEWS:

04-25-2012-

KINGI’s KAJUKENBO Head Instructor ROBERT KINGI is working wonders in Southern California with his young, talented, and fiery squad of martial artists. Kingi notes that he has several “newbies” and first time competitors on his 2012 Team. Says Kingi, “We have basically been working on fundamentals and pushing them to become smarter fighters more than anything. Obviously the physical aspects are there, they work harder than most in that area, but the mental aspect is where we are spending the most time with them.” While he attempts to evolve his raw players, Kingi has two of the best young adults in today’s game, LEON JEFFERSON and KEYON ALLEN, amongst others. On the coaching development for their experienced players, Kingi hinted, “For the more seasoned vets, we are just focusing on their weaknesses and turning them into strengths, maximizing their potential. We have some really talented and motivated kids, so I am blessed.”

03-19-2012-

ART OF SHOTOKAN Head Instructor MIKE GUIDO on his Team’s current focus, “Lately Art of SHotokan has been dedicating a lot of its training sessions on Fighting performance. Blitzing, rythym and movement. Plus, Im a firm believer in Cardio training. So this week will be intense and mind blowing. Drills, Drills, Drills. As far as Forms go. We have some students changing their forms and some are polishing up their technique and bringing the intensity up 10 fold.” Guido has high praise on two particular Art of Shotokan Members, JIM DEDMON and MORGON BORROR. Dedmon was a top forms and weapons competitors in the 90′s and made his return this season after 16years of inactivity. Borror received high praise from Guido after several spirited bouts versus Top Women fighters JOSLYNN ESPINOZA and GERRICA TRIAS. Guido resounded about his two superstars, “You watch this years point standings and I guarantee they’ll be on top!! Im proud to have them as my students.”

COMPETITION NEWS:

04/06/2012-

President Sean Dumlao & VP Tony Kattengell travelled to Reno, NV this past weekend and signed the contracts to have this year’s 2012 The LEAGUE FINALS at the luxurious PEPPERMILL RESORT CASINO for the 2nd year in a row. The grandeur and impressive design of the Resort made it an easy choice for the LEAGUE, as the 5-star facility drew raving reviews from attendees of last year’s FINALS. “It was almost a no-brainer for us work with the Peppermill Hotel after the experience we had with them last year,” said President Sean Dumlao. He continued, “We worked out a room rate deal with the Peppermill Hotel that I think will be financially reasonable for all families and athletes to attend our Finals in October.” This year, the Peppermill Hotel is offering a room rate of $59/night for the North Tower rooms, $69/night for the Peppermill Tower rooms, and $109/night for the Tuscany Tower rooms. The cutoff date for these special room rates will be September 21st. More information will be announced regarding room reservations soon….

REGION 3 (NEVADA):

03-19-2012-

TEAM BLACK ROCK is an underbelt Team that was started by MARTIN AMBA, MATTHEW MCBRIDE, and TYLER CROWLEY. The coaches of the Team attempt to choose kids that aren’t only talented but possess the right Martial Arts Attitude. Their 3 main goals- 1. To take our area’s top talent and develop them into champions, in the ring and outside of it. 2. To develop a sense of community and camaraderie amongst our area’s martial arts schools. 3. To give back to our martial arts community by sharing our passion for Sport Martial Arts.

On the Reno Tournament scene, Amba reflected, “It’s finally bearing fruit. Not long ago, I had contemplated giving up and retiring from the martial arts altogether. Needless to say, it’s been a rough five years for me as I tried to develop the Reno area for tournament competition but it’s finally coming together recently thanks to help from Larry Hall, Dave McNeill, Louis Lawson, Matthew McBride, Tyler Crowley, and of course my own family, Joji and Mj.” The Reno Leaders have been conducting recent local seminars that at last look drew more than 60 participants. The hard work by Amba, Hall, and the other visionaries in the Reno area are on the upswing….

03-13-2012-

MARTIN AMBA & LARRY HALL are hosting various seminars throughout the month of April in the Nevada region. Household Sport Martial Art names such as WILLIE HICKS and the aforementioned JULIO CASTRO are being booked as we speak. We will have details when these Training Mini-Camps are locked in. Stay Tuned!!….

REGION 5 (SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA):

04-25-2012-

When asked which players to look out from from his spirited Team, Coach ROBERT KINGI from Kingi’s Kajukenbo said, “There are quite a few new members that we have high hopes for. We have one little 6 year old named Cavier Galbert. We call him “Hollywood.” This kid is a natural, has his own swag! Haha! He never ceases to amaze us. We have one young lady named Je’Lyne Lillie who is a little firecracker. She is little, but she is going to make some big noise this year. And we have a generational addition, Keyon Allen’s little cousin, Caleb Hobson. Once he gets it together, he is going to be a force. Some of these kids are just genuinely nice kids, so we have to get them to be a little more aggressive, but when that time comes, look out!”

04-19-2012-

Congrats to LEON JEFFERSON for winning the Men’s Overall Sparring Grand at the SURF CITY CHAMPIONSHIPS which took place in Huntington Beach, CA last week. Results and a short write up will be posted within the week!

03-13-12-

It looks like Navarro’s Muay Thai Kickboxing Divisions will cover the Southern California events spearheaded by STEVE COOPER & MO OTA. Professor CARLOS NAVARRO & Grandmaster RUBIE NAVARRO will be having Kickboxing athletes lock horns down south in spirited competitions…..

The first Region 5 tournament is approaching on April 14th at the SURF CITY OPEN in Hunington Beach, CA!!….

REGION 6-9 (SOUTH AMERICA):

News being collected. Updates coming soon!!….
